The South African Hockey Association is pleased to announce an Emerging squad. This squad will consist of players that are part of our growth and development program in South Africa. These players will be required to attend all High Performance sessions in the relevant Provinces.
V. Prior (North West), B. Mbana (Northerns Blues), J. le Roux (Western Province), G. Jones (KwaZulu Natal Coastals), F. Pretorius (Northerns Blues), E. Rose-Innes (Western Province), D. Scott (Northerns Blues), O. Whiteley (Southern Gauteng), A. Freddy (Western Province), B. Grant (KwaZulu Natal Coastals), A. Vervoort (Western Province), O. Mvimbi (Southern Gauteng), C. Terwin (Western Province), N. Gonsalves (Northerns Blues), D. Marcus (Amathole), R. Fredericks (Western Province), S. Reddy (Eastern Province), A. Wilson (Western Province), Matt. Botha (KwaZulu Natal Coastals), JP. de Voux (Western Province), V. Erasmus (Western Province), J. McInroy (Western Province), D. Kimfley (Eastern Province), M. Dlamini (KwaZulu Natal Coastals), S. Nthuli (KwaZulu Natal Coastals), R. Roberts (Southern Gauteng), G. Joseph (Eastern Province)

The recent emerging side which was announced recently is a joke. Pease tell me how players who have already been in and were dropped from the National side can be considered emerging players. If they are intending this to be a SA A side then I can understand keeping them in the “loop”. Furthermore, if you have watched hockey as long as I have you must surely understand the concept that even with skill and being able to play a great game, some players just reach their limit and no amount of coaching will make them improve to the level needed at national level. Now some of these emerging players definately fall into that category.
I am dumbfounded that the selectors did not consider that not even one of the youngsters who played for KZN Inland were worthy of a spot in this emerging side. Bearing in mind that Inland were 2 minutes away from a semi spot when they played Coastals and the fact that bye and large they are a club/varsity side competing in a National tournament and the fact that despite this and injury to key players they still held their heads high and came 5th overall. Doesn’t say much for the other provinces who came behind them.
In my opinion for what its worth, at least 2 players should have walked into this emerging side being Justin Domleo and Jethro Eustice who are amazing youngsters and two of the better defenders in the country. Clearly our selectors lost the plot and could not see further than the defeat they took from Southerns. A team works as a unit and a few weak links can kill a team/defender but Selectors should be able to see past this and recognise talent in the individual. That is if they have the ability and knowledge to start with.
In reality the selectors have managed to send a message that if you want to be recognised as an emerging or potential national player you shouldn’t be doing it with KZN Inland. Can they honestly say that out of the three teams Inland had at tournament only one player is worthy of selection ie Tommy Hammond. I dont think so. We all know what a wonderful player tommy is but he did not win the 5th position all by himself.
Another area of concern is the selection of all the white faces in this so called emerging team. Surely with our development programme and the criteria for the Commonwealth and Olympic games being 50/50 this would have been the perfect platform for our young non white players to be recognised and developed in a proper and acceptable way so that when we have to provide 50/50 we would be doing so on merit and ability.
SAHA has clearly not sent the right message to the Selectors who should re-think this entire squad and the reason for its being in the first place. Never mind that we are desperate for sponsors – what sort of message are we sending potential sponsers?
Finally, phew.. looking at the Ladies selection it would seem to indicate that coming 5th is no biggie as Western Province managed to snap up 10 positions in the National Team let alone an emerging squad.
The whole thing is a joke and we will always be a second rate nation in hockey until we sort out the internal politics and get some professional, unbiased people on board.
I couldn’t agree more…. I find it hard to believe that a side which comes 5th (KZN Inland) in South Africa’s toughest tournament can only get 1 player in two squads which consist of 53 players???? Something is not right here!!! Here is the break-down of the selections made… some interesting stats:
KZN Coastals: 12 players
Southern Gauteng: 8 players
Western Province: 12 players
Northern Gauteng: 5 players
KZN Inland: 1 player
Eastern Province: 5 players
Peninsula: 2 players
North West: 2 players
Border: 2 players
KZN Mynahs: 1 player
Players Not at the tournament: 3 (2 from Western Province & 1 from Northerns)
Positions at IPT:
A Section:
1. KZN Coastals
2. Southern Gauteng
3. Western Province
4. Northerns
5. KZN Inland
6. EP
7. Peninsula
8. North West
B Section:
1. Border
2. SACD
3. Wits
4. KZN Mynahs
Food for thought!!!
Michael, when they look for some of those to take the game forward as you mentioned – do you think you’d fall into the biased or unbiased category?
Little too much Inlands flavour to your take on things it seems.?
Stew I hope you are not suggesting that if someone lives in a Province or supports a specific team that they are obviously bias in their favour. You see cause if this were the case how would we ever find unbiased selectors cause they all got to come from some Province. Now would your theory render them bias!!
The facts are the facts regardless of where you live and who you support.
SA Hockey is still too political !! If the selector’s don’t like your face you are doomed. If you don’t kiss *&# you are doomed !!
Michael, you seem to be a balanced young man – a chip on both shoulders I dare say and with a typical “small town” mentaility. The finishing positions at an 8 team A Section IPT do not necessarily reflect how selections should be done. Try selecting one day and you will quickly see how things work my friend. Secondly, at National level one tries where possible to get some form of continuity but well within reason. Thirdly, the “Emerging Squad” as it has been termed is perhaps a misnomer in some ways. It is merely a second tier squad that can expose some new and inexperienced players to an international game or two, should the opportunity ever arise and it does have one or two players who have been in the picture recently and a couple with experience. Imagine taking on the Germans with a bunch of “virgins” as it were? The exercise would be of benefit for both the tier two squad and the visitors. Now get off the only high horse in a one horse town and see the very big picture and what is trying to be achieved. As a hockey nation we believe that we are on the threshold of some exciting times so back the selection panel and Clarkie in the mean time and lets see where we end up. Take good care, and seeing you use a pseudonym, all the best from the “Greyzone.”
Keith, what on earth do you mean when you say that SA Hockey is too political? And “if they don’t like your face you are doomed.” And “if you don’t kiss *&# you are doomed.” Goodness me you paint a really gloomy face for the SA Hockey selection panel and clearly with okes like you around making comments like this, how can we ever expect to move forward with any positivity? Don’t give us thoughts on what you think the problems are, give us solutions for Heaven sake! Or better still make yourself available to coach, select or even umpire at some level – give back to the game what you think you are not getting.
Yes get into coaching and have to put up with all the BS from the Govt as to how things should be done!! I don’t think so. What happened to leaving politics OUT OF SPORT!!!
Micheal, your comments are EXACTLY what SAHA don’t want to hear. Excellent points, however I fear that they will all fall on deaf ears!!
I just wanted to comment on the photo’s I think they are great, well done Keith
