On the final day of pool play, both New Zealand and South Africa were looking to move up in Pool F.
The first half featured a New Zealand side that controlled much of the pace of match. South Africa’s backfield was strong in denying not only New Zealand’s attacking chances in the circle, but also their penalty corner opportunities in the first half.
South Africa’s #17 Nicolene Terblanche broke through in the 35th minute scoring a field goal to put South Africa up 1-0 over New Zealand at the half.
New Zealand’s #1 Gemma Flynn scored a field goal in the 44th minute to put her team on the board, making it 1-1.
Four minutes later, #3 Bridget Blackwood helped New Zealand take a 2-1 lead off a penalty corner.
New Zealand’s lead, however, did not last long; with South Africa’s Nicole Kemp (#9) sending home the equalizer to make 2-2 in the 54th minute.
New Zealand went up 3-2 over South Africa in the 62nd minute off a penalty corner by #14 Elizabeth Gunson. South Africa’s biggest chance to tie the match was on penalty corner in the 67th minute; but New Zealand held firm and onto their 3-2 lead for the win.
